Borrowing a Page from the Logistics Playbook: How the NFL Moves Team Equipment

It’s that time of year again…another NFL season has begun. As players make their way to the airport for a road game, it is likely that somewhere a truck full of their equipment is rolling towards the stadium.

Each week equipment is transported between practice facilities, home stadiums, airports and visiting stadiums for all 32 teams. “That’s where the trucking industry comes in, moving about two truckloads of gear for every team between the game sites and back for each game,” writes David Elfin, Staff Reporter for Transport Topics. [1]

The Baltimore Ravens have an informative page on their site titled The Team Behind The Team dedicated to staff that work “behind the scenes” in preparation for games. According to the site, “The semi-truck gets loaded Friday afternoon, and the equipment staff starts that morning by delivering bags to the locker room for players to pack up. After the team finishes morning practice, players pack their bags, which are then loaded onto the trucks. In addition to full-time equipment staff, the Ravens employ several retired or off-duty firemen to help with this process.”

Teams like the Miami Dolphins rely on the same drivers for each road game while others (e.g, San Diego Chargers, New York Giants) defer to local owner-operators or preferred providers in the destination city. [1] Read more about what happens once the trucks arrive at the airport and/or visiting stadium.
